1. GETTING STARTED
1a. System Requirements
-----------------------
Fallout Tactics requires the following:
Pentium II (or compatible) 300 MHz
64 MB RAM
WINDOWS 95, 98 and 2000 with DirectX 7.0 or later
150 MB of Hard Drive Space
DirectX Certified Video Card with at least 4 MB of video RAM.
Must support at least 800x600 at 16bit or 32bit color.
DirectX Certified Sound Card
Keyboard, Mouse
For multiplayer, Fallout Tactics requires the following:
A TCP/IP-based Local Area Network (LAN) and/or
An Internet connection (56k or better) using TCP/IP
Important Note regarding 2MB vs 4MB+ Video Cards
------------------------------------------------
While you can still run Tactics with a 2MB video card, we
recommend against it - performance will be very poor. We
do not support 2MB cards in an official capacity. Fallout
Tactics requires a 4MB card and we recommend that you obtain
the latest DirectX drivers for your video card, direct from
the company that makes your card.
1b. Installation
----------------
Double-click on the SETUP.EXE file. Follow the on-screen
instructions.
After installing Fallout Tactics, you will be given the option
to install GameSpy(tm) Arcade. GameSpy Arcade allows you to
easily find or host Internet multiplayer games.
If you do not install GameSpy Arcade at this time, you can
install it by double-clicking on the ArcadeInstallFallout10.exe
icon, located in your Fallout Tactics download folder. You can
also install it by going to: www.gamespy.com and clicking on
DOWNLOAD.
1c. Running Fallout Tactics
---------------------------
If you use the default installation settings for Fallout Tactics,
it will be installed in a '14 Degrees East' Program Group in your Start
menu. Click on "Fallout Tactics Multiplayer Demo" to start the
game.
1d. Fallout Tactics Web Page
----------------------------
If there is anything that you are having problems with or cannot
find in this readme file, stop by the Fallout Tactics Web Page at:
http://www.interplay.com/falloutbos
Aside from cool game materials and errata, you may be able to find
an answer for whatever question you might have.

2. THE GAME
2a. The Fallout Universe
------------------------
War, war, never changes...
And it can be really rather unpleasant. After the bomb had
dropped, toilet paper and those funny little packets of soap that
you find in hotel rooms became very difficult to find.
Through their military and technical expertise, the Brotherhood of
Steel were able to rebuild their lives after the war. They
proclaimed themselves the technological saviors of mankind, and
allowed those whom they thought wise enough to join their cause.
But many within the Brotherhood were not satisfied with their
isolationist policies. They sought to bring their prosperity and
security to the rest of the people in the scarred lands. A group
of several top-ranking members decided that the time had come to
split away from their comrades. They were determined to take
their skills and use them to awaken the long-dormant technologies
of the ancients, in the hopes of restoring peace and unity to the
country.
This is their story...
Well, actually, it's just a demo, but you get the point.
2b. Playing the game
--------------------
We strongly recommend that you play the four tutorials which are
included in this demo. Not only do they introduce all the key
elements on the control system but they also contain valuable
tactical examples to get you started.
To select the tutorials, click on the tutorial button from the
intro screen. Choose from one of the four tutorials:
Basic
This tutorial guides the player through the control
system used in the game. It includes: Movement,
Weapon use, Stances, Skills, and Using objects.
Ambush, Stealth, Sniper
These three tutorials all start with a recorded movie
demonstrating some key aspect of game play. The
player then has a chance to copy the movie or invent
their own way of tackling the problem.
After playing the tutorials, there are two stand alone missions to
choose from. Click on the Mission 1 and Mission 2 buttons to
start that respective mission. The missions do not have to be
played in any particular order, but we suggest you start with
Mission 1.
All buttons in the GUI have mouse-over text. Hold the mouse over
the button for a brief moment to see the button name and the
hot-key (if any) to activate that button from the keyboard.
For details of keyboard short cuts press "H", for Help.

Fallout Tactics normally and click on MULTIPLAYER from the main menu.
To play in a GameSpy game over the Internet, launch GameSpy Arcade from
the Start->Programs menu.
Click in the Enter Name text box and type your name. The Active Servers
window will show the current games. You can click BACK to return to the
main menu.

---
Fallout Tactics will display all current games on your LAN. To start a
new game, click HOST. To join an existing game, click on the game and
then click JOIN.
Direct TCP/IP
-------------
Enter the IP address of your host server in the Optional Server IP box.
Press ENTER. The server will appear in the game list once it is found.
Click on the game and then click JOIN to enter the game.
GameSpy
-------
Run GameSpy Arcade from the Start->Programs menu. Follow the on-screen
instructions or use the Help feature in GameSpy Arcade.
Hosting a Game
--------------
Enter your server name (it defaults to your player name). Optionally,
enter a password. Players must enter this password before they will be
allowed to join.
You can set the game options. These cannot be changed once the game
starts. Click on the Options button.
Turn Based: CTB, Individual or Squad. See Config, below.

everything all the time).
Max Squad Members: Sets the maximum number of characters per squad.
Time of Day: Default, Pre-Dawn, Day, Evening, or Night.

if they are between you and your target. Defaults to 25%, can be
set to 0% to 100%.

Defaults to 100%, can be set to 25% to 200%.
Turn Time Limit: How many seconds players have to act on their turn
in Individual or Squad Turn-Based modes. 0 seconds means no limit.
Game Time Limit: How long the game will last, in minutes. 0 means
the game will not end until all enemy squads are defeated.
Click Start Game when ready. Click Leave Game to cancel.
Multiplayer Game Types
----------------------
There are two game types in the Multiplayer demo: Skirmish and Assault.
In Skirmish, you must defeat the other enemy squads. In Assault, one
side plays the defenders and the other side is the attackers. The
attackers must throw a switch in the defender's base to win. The
defenders must stop the attackers from accomplishing their mission.
2d. Saving and Loading in Single-player
---------------------------------------
The demo only has the quick load option available. This means
that when you save a game it will always be saved in the same
file. When you load a game it will always be loaded from the
same file. The final game will allow the player to name the
save game file and save multiple files.
2e. Fallout Tactics Config
--------------------------
The configuration settings are available from within the game
from the OPTIONS option in the main menu.
The various options are contained within three tabs:
GAME, DISPLAY and SOUND
GAME
----
Run Mode: Determines when the characters walk or run.
Always Walk - the selected character will walk to a destination
after a single click.
Smart Run - the selected character will run to a location
unless they are in stealth mode or prone or
crouched.
Always Run - The selected character will always run to a
location.
Game Difficulty: The difficulty level can be adjusted.
Message Filter: Controls the amount of text messages that the game
will report to the player. Spoken text is always reported.
Turn Based: This controls what version of Turn-Based combat you will
be playing: Continuous, Individual or Squad. The game defaults to
Continuous (CTB). Individual means each character will move at
their own time during the turn. Squad means that all characters on
a squad will move at the same time during a turn.
Language filter: Set this on to filter out rude words.
DISPLAY
-------
Display Mode: Choose from up to four exciting display modes!
The exact number of display modes available will depend on
your system and video card. Lower resolutions and lower
color-depths will give you better performance on some machines.
Fallout Tactics supports 800x600 (default) and 1024x768.
Depending on your video card, you may play in 16 or 32-bit.
Anti-Aliased Tiles: Deselect this for a faster frame rate on older
machines.
Anti-Aliased Characters: Deselect this for a faster frame rate on
older machines.
Cursor Mode: Leave this in hardware for most hardware platforms.
There is a known problem with some Voodoo 3 cards which causes
the cursor to misbehave. Try selecting the software cursor on
these cards.
SOUND
-----
Select the appropriate Driver - this should happen automatically.
Master Volume: Controls the sound level for everything.
Sound FX Volume: Controls volume of Sound Effects.
Music Volume: Controls the volume of the music.
Speech Volume: Controls the volume of the speech.
Move the volume sliders to the left to lower the volume, and move
the sliders to the right to increase the volume.
2f. The complete Fallout Tactics Game
-------------------------------------
This demo represents a very cut down version of the final game.
Although most of the key elements of a typical mission are
demonstrated in the two missions, a lot of the game is not. For
example, in the final game the player will be able to:
* Choose their squad from a pool of characters at the BOS bunker!
* Choose equipment for their squad from a quartermaster's store
at the Brotherhood of Steel bunker...
* Loot and barter weapons/equipment in one mission to use in
another!
* Drive a variety of vehicles in the wastelands and certain
missions!
* Choose from a huge selection of weapons (over 130) ranging from
low tech melee to high tech energy weapons!
* Use the Fallout SPECIAL system to create a main character...
* Characters gain skills and perks as they increase in levels...
* See an intricate and exciting story line unfold, told through a
mixture of movies, slide shows, in game cut scenes and NPC
dialogue!
* A variety of multi-player games where the players will be able
to choose squads, weapons and missions and play via LAN or
Internet.
==================================================================
3. TROUBLESHOOTING
3a. Tweaking Performance
------------------------
* Turn OFF Anti-Aliasing for both tiles and characters.
* Reduce the screen resolution to 800x600.
* Run the game in 16-bit mode as this may run faster on older
machines.
* The game loads a substantial amount of data off the hard-drive
during play. To increase performance try defragmenting the
hard-drive.
3b. Known Problems
------------------
* The game will not run correctly on Windows 95a.
* There are performance issues on older machines. We are hoping
to increase performance for the final game (maybe 20%).
* Voodoo 3 3000: When running full screen in 800x600, there is
some white flickering to the left side of the intro
developer screens.
* Virtual Memory must be enabled.
* The multiplayer game mode "Hardcore" is not enabled for this demo.
3c. Feedback

feedback. If you are having technical and/or gameplay problems,
please contact us at the Fallout Forum:
